It is nearly impossible to have a conversation about grill thermometers without mentioning the Weber iGrill 2. As you’ll soon realize from our iGrill2 review, this device hasn’t been around for nearly as long as the grilling machine itself.

However, it has proven itself to be one of the best Bluetooth thermometers in the market in its fairly short time of existence. So much so that it has been able to gather quite a buzz for itself among several grilling enthusiasts.

But, hold on a second. What makes it so special? Is it even worth all the hype, or is it just another phony piece of tech? Well, dear friend, we’ll be answering those questions and many others in our Weber iGrill 2 review. Sit tight.

Review of Weber iGrill2 Bluetooth Thermometer in A Nutshell

Anyone who truly likes to grill would have, at least, heard about the Weber brand. This is because, over the last few years of their existence, this brand has constantly put excellent grilling products, accessories, and thermometers (Like iGrill mini, iGrill2, iGrill3) in the market. But, the Weber iGrill 2 is such an outstanding one.

  • Weber 7203 iGrill 2 Bluetooth Grill Thermometer
  • Weber 7203 iGrill 2 Bluetooth Grill Thermometer

Initially, Weber bought the iGrill 2 a couple of years ago from another brand called iDevices. The current model of the device itself is still quite similar to the original one they purchased.

However, the main difference lies in the mobile application and the amount of work they’ve put into improving it. As a result of their improvement efforts, the iGrill 2 mobile app is now one of the best of its kind with myriads of features that we’ll get into shortly.

For now, you should know that the device itself is a Bluetooth-enabled thermometer that you can use to measure temperatures on your grill. It can measure up to four different temperatures at a time while you’re cooking your meal. This helps to improve your cooking by taking guess games out of your meat’s doneness determination.

This neat little piece of tech has a couple of physical and performance features to achieve its purpose.

One of the most notable among the latter is in the form of four probes (two are included with the unit). Now, these probes, as the name might imply, are pointy, nail-like metals. They are to be inserted into the meat to find out how hot it is and determine its doneness.

The interesting thing about them is that they can resist heat up to about 716˚F. But, they can still help you measure between -22˚F to 572˚F.

To help you see the results of the temperature measurements, this device has a digital display.

To access the Bluetooth functions, you need a minimum Android 6.0 & Bluetooth 4.0 or iOS 11.1.

But, once connected, the device has a lot of capabilities. One of them is that you can also name each probe separately upon connection. When that’s done, you can set temperature limits for each probe. As soon as the probes notice a temperature change or shift from the limits, they’ll send an alarm to your phone. So, even if you’re away from the grill. You can come back to check.

To make things spicier, the mobile app provides you with a downloadable temperature vs. time chart. But, if you’re more interested in cooking and having fun than reading charts and numbers, you’re covered too. There’s a social feature that allows you to share grilling pictures and experiences with other iGrill 2 users.

What’s in the iGrill2 Box?

As soon as you get the Weber iGrill 2, the first thing you’ll notice is how well-branded the box is. Additionally, for a device that’s so small, the box is pretty sturdy and could protect the inner contents with a fair amount of ease.

Speaking of the inner contents, the box contains virtually everything you’ll need to get this device started, including the batteries. See for yourself.

Key Features of Weber iGrill 2 Thermometer

01

Extensive battery life:

The manufacturers claim that this device has a battery life of 200 hours. In the process of writing this Weber iGrill 2 review, we discovered that that’s about eight days and a couple of hours.

But, while most people don’t grill for eight days at a stretch, many have expressed satisfaction with the battery life.

02

User-friendly mobile app:

The device can be synced with a mobile app on android and iOS.

Of course, like every other app, users might have to spend the first few minutes finding their way around the app. But, once that’s done, it’s all smooth sailing.

03

Bright LED display:

Most people grill during the day. It is a lot more fun that way. But, if there’s too much sunlight, it can obstruct the view of any of your digital screens.

Thankfully, this thermometer has a screen bright enough to guarantee visibility even in broad daylight.

04

Adjustable temperature setting:

One major feature of this tool is how the probes can be easily programmed. You set each probe to ring your phone’s alarm for a different temperature.

This is a pretty useful feature if you have a few friends who like different doneness levels for their steaks.

05

Magnetic mounts:

Instead of struggling with your grill thermometer, you can mount it easily on your grill or oven. This is possible with the help of magnetic discs on the base units of each thermometer.

However, if your grill isn’t metallic, you can use an adhesive that comes with the product.

06

Auto-off capability:

Unlike many other bbq thermometers like itself, the iGrill 2 doesn’t stay on indefinitely. Instead, this product will go off automatically after a certain period. The point of all these is to prevent unnecessary battery depletion.

However, it is based on certain criteria.

  • If the Bluetooth is connected to a smartphone and its probes are inside a piece of meat, it will not shut off automatically.
  • If the thermometer has a probe in but isn’t connected to a smartphone, it will go off after eight hours.
  • If the probe isn’t inserted and the device isn’t connected to your smartphone, the thermometer will shut off in 5 minutes.

Keep in mind that these peculiar features are also the advantages you’d get from using this Bluetooth thermometer.

Our Thoughts and Test Results of iGrill 2 Thermometer

The Weber iGrill2 thermometer is a pretty impressive device. To say otherwise in this Weber iGrill 2 review would be a tad dishonest. One of our favorite things about this device is that you can program four probes to sense different temperatures.

We think this is incredibly convenient because it allows for a lot of culinary freedom. When one piece of meat has reached a level of doneness, you would know. If your meat is getting burned, you can quickly get back to it when your alarm rings.

However, we do wish that the probes were significantly more durable. They’re the way they are because it allows for optimal temperature measurement. Still, it would be nice if you could use them as you please without fear of damage.

Now that that’s done, here are the test results from our Weber iGrill 2 review:

Accuracy and precision: The Weber iGrill 2 thermometer is quite accurate at its job. Of course, there might be a slight difference of ±1°F.

But, if we were to give our opinion, we’d say it performs excellently in terms of accuracy.

➡ Reading Time: The reading time is how long your device needs to be inside the meat to give an accurate temperature reading.

On average, the thermometer can easily read your grilling meat’s temperatures in about 16.25 seconds.

➡ Response time: The mobile app has an impressive response time of 3 seconds.

➡ Bluetooth coverage: During our Weber iGrill 2 review, we easily noticed that the product has a coverage area of about 150 feet. This might be a bit small, considering that some other models have almost double that number.

Still, it’s a pretty good coverage area. We’ll say it performs well in this regard.

➡ Battery life: The manufacturers claim it can last for 200 hours. We couldn’t keep grilling for eight days straight. But, for as long as we used the thermometer, we didn’t have any battery issues.

What’s more, other users online agree that the battery is pretty good. In this regard, we’ll say the thermometer is excellent.

➡ Temperature range: The Weber iGrill 2 can measure temperatures ranging between -22°F to 572°F.

This is significantly higher and lower than the temperature of standard ovens and refrigerators. So, you shouldn’t have much of an issue measuring high or low temperatures.

In this regard, the thermometer performed very well.

➡ Convenience: The thermometer itself can be easily operated with the push of a button. The mobile app isn’t difficult to find your way around.

You don’t have to be a tech genius to use it. For this, we’ll say the product performs excellently.

All in all, it’s not hard to see that this Weber iGrill 2 thermometer lives up to its hype.

Pros
  • Incredibly friendly user interface and easy navigation systems make it easy to operate the device and app.
  • Impressive battery life that can guarantee several hours of uninterrupted use.
  • Long-range capability allows you to move away from your grill and come back when the time is right.
  • Accurate temperature measurements.
Cons
  • Bluetooth range can certainly be higher than its current 150 feet.
  • Meat probes are a tad too delicate and can be damaged easily.

Who is the thermometer for?

There isn’t much of a limitation regarding those who can use the product. Whether you’re an intense grilling enthusiast or just a person who likes to have a steak now and then, you’re welcome to use the product.

As long as you’re interested in getting accurate cooking, the iGrill 2 is a worthy investment.

Six important things you should know about the Weber iGrill 2 thermometer

1. Ease of use

As we’ve already established, the thermometer is pretty easy to use. All you need to do is connect it to your mobile device and make a few configurations.

Afterward, it’s easy enough for anyone to get the hang of it.

2. Ease of setup

The setup process isn’t complicated. There’s already a magnetic mount attached to the thermometer. Simply place it on your oven, and it’ll stick.

If your oven isn’t metallic, it’s still good. There’s an adhesive you can use to keep your thermometer in place.

Then, download the app, connect, and begin using it.

Above all these, however, the device comes with a user manual. The manual is a 20-page document that details every single thing you need to know to get started with Bluetooth connectivity.

3. Compatibility with Weber and non-Weber grills

This thermometer is compatible with all the grills including the Weber Genesis, Genesis II, Weber Spirit, Spirit II, and any other type of grill you might have. Alongside that, you can use it for smokers and ovens.

4. Upgrades, accessories, and attachments

The primary upgrade to this thermometer is the Weber 7204 iGrill 3. Outside that, you can purchase new meat probes separately. Like most other devices, the batteries can be easily replaced too. Other accessories and attachments include:

●     Ambient Temperature Probe: This peculiar probe type is a neat little accessory that’s sold separately. It can help you measure ambient temperatures between 22oF and 572oF. It is a very handy accessory to have if you need to measure more meat temperatures than the two-probed device will allow.

●     CASEMATIX Instant Thermometer Case: This case provides a significant amount of protection for your Bluetooth thermometer with a padded interior and a hard shell exterior.

5. Cleaning and maintenance

Cleaning this product isn’t much of a herculean task. With a lint-free cloth and nonabrasive cleanser, you can get the job done.

However, you must never put the device underwater as it isn’t waterproof.

Outside this, if you want to maintain your Bluetooth thermometer properly, you need to be wary of the magnetic base. This part of the device isn’t very heat-resistant. As such, you can not put it on the grill/smoker’s cover. Doing so would damage your thermometer. It’s best to put the device in a low-heat area.

Other cleaning and maintenance ideas you should note are:

  • You only need to wipe the probes with a damp sanitary towel to clean them.
  • During the cleaning process, the probe wires mustn’t get wet.
  • You mustn’t mix old and new batteries in the Bluetooth thermometer. You also must not mix alkaline, rechargeable, or standard batteries together.

6. Warranty details

The warranty for this product doesn’t last beyond two years.

How does it compare?

We’ve spent most of our iGrill 2 reviews looking at this excellent thermometer and all its capacities. Now, let’s see how it holds its ground against some of its competition:

Weber iGrill 2 VS InkBird IBT-4XS

Of these two thermometers, the latter is cheaper. However, it still compares relatively well to the Weber iGrill 2.

●     Bluetooth range: They both cover a range of about 150 feet.

●     Probes: The InkBird IBT-4XS can also allow the connection of up to four probes. However, InkBird’s thermometer is slightly longer. This provides a bit more flexibility.

●     Batteries: The battery life of the Weber iGrill 2 is significantly longer than its competitor. While it can boast 200 hours, InkBird can only boast 60 hours. However, the latter does have the option of a USB cable.

●     App: Many users agree that the UI of Weber’s app is more aesthetic than InkBird’s.

iGrill 2 VS iGrill 3

The battle for supremacy between the iGrill 2 and iGrill 3 is one that’s almost as old as time itself. Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. Even though the latter came out as an upgrade to the former, they still compete for customer attention.

One of the main points of competition, igrill2 vs igrill 3, is their compatibility level.

iGrill 2 is universally compatible, which means it works with any kind of smoker and grill and ovens in the market.

On the other hand, iGrill 3 is a bit more choosy.

Wrap It Up

In our iGrill2 review, we’ve covered virtually everything you need to know. In our opinion, this thermometer is as good as people say it is.

Of course, certain things like the connection range and probe durability could use a bit of work. But, ultimately, it’s not a bad investment.

FAQs of Weber iGrill 2

Is the iGrill 2 thermometer waterproof?

No, it isn’t. If you submerge it underwater, you’ll damage it. As such, it’s important to exercise caution while using it. To eliminate the risk of submerging it in the water while cleaning, you can use a damp cloth as advised in our cleaning and maintenance instructions.

Is iGrill 2 universally compatible?

Yes, it is. It wasn’t designed for any specific grill. As such, you can use it with different types of grill you have. This includes grills in the Weber Genesis and Weber Spirit series.

Does Weber iGrill2 also work with smokers and ovens?

Yes, it functions well with smokers and ovens. As long as you do not place on an extremely hot part of the smoker or oven, you’ll be fine.
